    Default Origin of the Name

How does the State of Virginia got its name? I believe that names represent what kind of person or place it is. I'm curious where the name Virginia comes from. I looked in wikipedia and all I got is history of Virginia and nothing about its name.

I looked this up and what I found is that it was named after Queen Elizabeth I because she was known as the Virgin Queen and that it may have been Sir Walter Raleigh who originally suggested it. Feel free to correct me, anyone, if that isn't right.

Thanks for that explanation. This could be the answer because most of the names of the states are related to a person or place from England.

Now I wonder who decides on the names of the states. Is it the people or governor of that state or the monarch of the country from which the people came from?
